HEALTH BENEFITS OF WHEAT GRASS JUICE– EMERGENCE OF WHEAT GRASS THERAPY

1.         Grass was the first sign of vegetation on earth when land first emerged out of water. Grass is also the base food chain or pyramid for all animals. Interestingly, grains, including wheat, rice, barley, oats, corn, millets etc, which are prime sources of food for humans, germinate into grass initially before becoming crops. These cereal grasses, especially, wheat grass contain many essential nutrients which they absorb directly from the soil.

2.         You may think grass is only meant for cows! But it is not so! The recent history of wheat grass goes back to the 1940s when Dr. Ann Wigmore claimed she healed herself of gangrene by eating weeds and grass she found in a vacant plot in Boston, USA. Dr. Wigmore found that wheat grass was the best nutritional source amongst about 3,000 varieties of grasses in the world for medicinal purposes. Dr. Ann Wigmore, founder of the Hippocrates Health Institute, Boston, USA, is one of the proponents of the wheat grass therapy. She even cured incurable advanced cancer and other patients.

CHLOROPHYLL – MAIN COMPONENT OF WHEAT GRASS

3.         The main component (70%) of wheat grass – a wonder plant – is chlorophyll which nature utilizes as a body cleanser, rebuilder and neutralizer of toxins. Dr. Wigmore in her book “Hippocrates Diet and Health Programme” rightly referred to chlorophyll as “green blood” since it forms the blood of plants. Others have named chlorophyll as the “concentrated sun power” or “solar energy”. Chlorophyll is a potent germicidal substance. It destroys certain types of germs that are responsible for spreading certain diseases and paralyses some others which are equally dangerous for us. According to Dr. Birscher, a research scientist, the consumption of chlorophyll increases the function of the heart, and beneficially affects the vascular system, the intestines, the uterus and the lungs. It raises the basic nitrogen exchange and is therefore a tonic which, considering its stimulating properties, is superior to all others.

4.         We all know that human blood contains a substance called haemoglobin. Haemoglobin contains hemin. From the view point of chemical formation, there are a lot of similarities between hemin and chlorophyll. In both of them the arrangement and the number of hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen molecules are almost similar. There is only one little difference between the constitution of hemin and chlorophyll. Magnesium is in the centre of chlorophyll molecules while in the centre of the hemin molecules we find iron.

5.         Owing to their close molecular resemblance, chlorophyll is considered to be the natural blood building element for all plant eaters and humans. Magnesium found in the protons of chlorophyll is essential and beneficial for about 30 enzymes of our body. On consumption, the chlorophyll molecules get attached to the molecules component of the blood and refurbish the lost

nutrition and resistance of the blood. Another similarity between wheat grass juice and human blood is that both have the same pH value. Both are alkaline, hence the juice not only gets digested and absorbed quickly in the body but its benefits reach the cells faster.

NUTRITIONAL ELEMENTS OF WHEAT GRASS JUICE

6. An analysis by a soil expert showed that wheat grass contained over 100 elements including vitamins, minerals and trace elements. These include vitamins A, B, C, E and K and iron, calcium, chlorine, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur, cobalt, zinc, etc. Hence wheat grass juice is a complete food and wonderful tonic capable of sustaining life in a healthy way. No wonder, health foodies swear by it as it is the “richest nutritional liquid” known to man. Wheat grass juice has also been rightly labeled as the “fountain of youth” and a “new age food”. Wheat grass juice is available worldwide as powder, tablets or capsules but freshly made juice in natural state is considered the best and most beneficial. It has been claimed that the nutritional value of wheat grass is 23 times that of selected fruits and vegetables.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF WHEAT GRASS JUICE

7. According to Dr. Wigmore, wheat grass juice, a panacea and nectar on this earth, has three most important therapeutic roles: blood purification, liver detoxification and colon cleansing. Health benefits of wheat grass juice are numerous and wide-ranging: –

Being a blood builder, anti-oxidant, anti-ageing factor, cancer inhibitor, cell rejuvenator, acting as effective energizer, kills harmful bacteria in the digestive system and improves digestion, reduces high blood pressure, improves blood sugar disorders, immune system supporter and protector against environmental pollution, including synthetic fertilizers, sunstroke, radiation and toxic heavy metals.

8. Wheat grass juice helps cure skin allergy and infections including psoriasis, improves flexibility of joints in arthritis, keeps hair from greying and falling, rids the body of toxins and waste matter and is excellent mouthwash for sore throat, pyorrhea and other dental infections. It is helpful for coronary and lung ailments, T.B., thalassaemia, kidney stones, asthma, constipation, weak eye sight, abdominal pain, insomnia etc. It is said that wheat grass is also beneficial externally for direct use on ear, eye, skin, gum and genital infections and diseases.

9. Wheat grass juice is said to be a sure remedy to get rid of diseases and ailments, but to obtain the desired results the natural resistance power of the body needs to be maintained. Amongst the factors responsible for weakening a person’s natural resistance power are: – wrong and harmful eating and living habits, irregular or fast stressful life, all kinds of addictions, lack of physical activity, mental tension, environmental pollution and indiscriminate use of medicines with harmful side effects. When the natural resistance power of the body get weakened it cannot resist the invasion of diseases.

10. Wheat grass juice is said to be innocent, totally safe without side effects, reasonably palatable and yet a very effective substance full of benevolent properties. Before embarking upon wheat grass therapy it is

advisable to consult your naturo food therapist. In any case before starting the systematic intake of wheat grass juice toxic elements present in the body should be eliminated by fruit juice fasting i.e. taking only fruit juices and warm water for a couple of days. It would also be beneficial to empty the bowels completely with the help of an anema. Thereafter along with wheat grass juice if the patient subsists on the raw diet of seasonal sweet and sour fruits, raw or steamed vegetables and sprouted grains, cereals and pulses, the results are faster and better.

11. The wheat grass juice should be “eaten and not drunk” i.e. not gulped down the throat in a hurry but should be sipped very slowly, this way digestive saliva in the mouth mixes with it properly and helps it get digested and absorbed properly in the system. Those who find the taste of the juice unpalatable may add some grape or citrus fruit juice in order to avoid nausea or vomiting sensation. However, salt, pepper or other spices should never be added to it just to make it tasty.

12. In the beginning of the wheat grass therapy restrict the intake of wheat grass juice and increase the doses gradually. If the dose of wheat grass juice is kept high from the beginning, then it is likely in some cases that the patient may complain of nausea, vomiting sensation, cold, diarrhoea or fever or similar other symptoms. But do not get panicky. You may try diluting the juice before taking it. In case you experience weakness, the most effective way to get over it is to drink protein/calcium rich sesame seed milk. And if the symptoms persist beyond 2 or 3 days, stop taking the wheat grass juice for a couple of days and resume it after the symptoms have subsided or you may like to seek expert advice.

13. It is advisable for maximum gain to take the wheat grass juice early in the morning on an empty stomach and do not eat or drink anything for about half an hour so that the juice gets absorb in the intestines.

14. Even after the disease is cured, it is advisable to take small doses (50ml) of wheat grass juice daily in order to maintain good health. Any normal healthy person can also take this quantity of the juice to increase immunity.

15. HOW TO GROW WHEAT GRASS FOR JUICE

(i) Wheat grass can be grown in any sheltered place where the direct rays of the sun do not reach from about 11 AM to 3 PM and where the temperature is mild. The direct rays of the sun have a tendency to sap the strength from the wheat grass.

(ii) A good variety of wheat should be soaked in luke warm water for 8-10 hours. The water should then be drained and those grains allowed to “slightly” sprout in a sprouting kit or a colander covered with wet towel or hung in a wet towel itself for about 12-16 hours.

(iii) Six or Seven shallow earthen pots or cheaply made wooden trays can be used to grow the wheat grass in succession each day as it takes 6 to 7 days for wheat grass to attain the desired height. These should be filled with organic compost manure/soil. Alternatively, suitably located flower bed borders can be used.

(iv) Spread the “slightly” sprouted wheat grains (touching each other) on the compost manure and cover these with a thin ¼” layer of well-moistured top soil or manure.

(v) Cover the sown areas with a dark cloth/newspapers or keep away from the sunlight in a room.

(vi) Water should be sprinkled on germinating grains to keep them moist (but not soaked) once or twice a day as needed for about 6-7 days.

(vii) When the wheat grass is 5” to 6” high (the proportion of chlorophyll and other nutrients starts reducing from the leaves as the grass grows longer), it should be cut with a scissor or sharp knife, washed and blended to extract the juice. A little water should be added to make it easier to blend and extract the juice through a fine piece of cloth.

(viii) The freshly extracted juice should be taken immediately as its efficacy reduces every minute through oxidization and the medicinal value is completely lost after 3 hours.

(ix) Wheat grass juice should preferably be extracted in a hand operated blender/mixer as the centrifugal forces in a high speed blender destroys much of its goodness by the heat generated.

16. WHEAT GRASS THERAPY — CAUTION!

(i) Actual wheat grass fiber is virtually indigestible on its own, it needs to be consumed preferably in fresh juice form only.

(ii) Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, babies and adults suffering from diarrhoea, nausea and hyperacidity should avoid wheat grass juice and consume it only on naturo-food therapist’s advice.

(iii) People who do not digest wheat too well may not benefit much from wheat grass juice.
